The fifty-three maps within the atlas diagrammatical everything western Europeans in 1570 knew regarding the form of the planet. Of course, there was a great deal that western Europeans in 1570 did not realize the form of the planet - beginning with Australia and Antarctic continent.

Ortelius is sometimes considered the first person to have theorized about continental drift. He believed he could see where the Americas had split apart from Europe.
In 1575, he was appointed the geographer to Spain’s King Philip II.
At the time of its publication, Ortelius’ atlas was the most expensive book ever created.
